Google Indic Keyboard lets you type and enjoy and type Indian languages on your android phone. Google rebranded this app which was initially called the Hindi Keyboard app to Indic Keyboard
The company added support for 10 more regional Indian and South Indian languages along with other keyboard features. New languages include Assamese, Bengali, Gujurati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Why is Google Indic Keyboard perfect for Indian Languages typing?
The answer to this question lies in the ability of this Indian keyboard apps ability to offer different modes including transliteration mode, which offers output in the native language by spelling out the pronunciation using English letters.
Its native keyboard mode offers typing directly in the native Indian script. And the Handwriting mode, currently available for Hindi only, allows users to write on the phone screen directly.
There is a Hinglish mode as well that suggests both English and Hinglish terms. According to the Google Play listing, the new Indic Keyboard comes with improved suggestions in both transliteration mode and native keyboard mode in Hindi.
The most important update for the keyboard apps UI for switching language modes has also been added. It now provides compact, convenient keyboard layouts.
Most people would like its Transliteration feature. For example, when you type using English, the app will convert it into your language. Eg: Typing “namaste” will give you नमस्ते.
Google Indic Keyboard supports Android version 4.1 and above (Jellybean, Kitkat, and Lollipop). If you can see your language in its native script below you should be able to install and use it.
If you plan to use a fully developed English language keyboard then Gboard is the stock keyboard app that Google recommends.
